My Little Secrets
My love of romance started as a teenager when a friend at
school lent me a Mills and Boon to read.
I was hooked. My tastes changed as I came across different story lines moving onto Silhouette and Loveswept, and lastly, Historical Romance, which I find very hard to deviate from. I love a good Cowboy, Knight, Native American, Lord or Pirate losing his heart to a strong, sensual, deserving femme fatale. With over two hundred and fifty historicals lining my bookshelf I guess you could class me as an addict. (My husband refuses to build another bookshelf.) Occasionally I was disappointed with the course the storyline meandered along and decided a few years ago the best way to get an ending I would be satisfied with was to write my own. Characters started to form in my mind and the idea of writing turned into an itch that was just crying out to be scratched. I purchased a simple writing program to help me with story development. Working my way through it I started developing a plot and forming strong believable characters, taking them in the direction I wanted them to go. I have since found out that sometimes the characters have a mind of their own and no amount of manipulation will make them follow the path I have set. I had a pregnant pause for a while, but once my daughter was old enough I resumed writing, enrolling in a course by correspondence, Writing for Publication – Category Romance. It was the best thing I did. It opened up a world of knowledge. I have since joined the Australian Romance Writers Association. I attended my first conference in Melbourne and loved it. I met a lot of lovely people and gained invaluable knowledge to help me continue my first manuscript. |
